From the West – Aberystwyth through Newtown, North – Chester through Welshpool/Montgomery, East – Shrewsbury through Churchstoke.
Go to THE BLUE BELL INN crossroads – where the Churchstoke to Newtown Road (A489) crosses the Montgomery to Bishop’s Castle road (B 4385)
Turn towards Bishop’s Castle keeping The Blue Bell Inn - with old Petrol pump - on your left. Follow the road (B4385) south around the little bend, over hump back bridge and passed the sign ‘Welcome to Wales’
Gateway to Mellington Hall in front of you, simply follow road around to the left. You soon pass a brown Mellington Hall + Caravan Park sign - on your right.
Some yards further along on the left, pass R.V.Pugh’s tractor and farm vehicle yard.
Turn right off the B4385 at the next road junction – farm house on corner and road sign to The Cann - The Cwm – Pantglas - Mellington Workshops also in Welsh.
Follow this road and sign in the direction of Pantglass + Workshops. After 500 yards turn right still following Pantglas sign.
Mellington Workshops (look like a low old school building), are directly in front of you. Follow road around to the left. Continue on this single track lane passing a mirror on tree 200 yards on. Soon you arrive at an Offa’s Dyke wooden ‘footpath sign’ on your right, and take a sharp left turn (the road looks like it goes straight on BUT it doesn’t as the road markings show.)
On the left is ‘Offa’s Dyke Cottage’. Follow the road until you reach a few houses with a small triangular green with a tree on it. Bear right here and immediately going up the hill you see a fork – take the left branch of the fork signed Mainstone - (Pantglas now goes off to the right).
Single lane goes up passing a green sign on the right – of Drewin Farm (B&B) – lane still goes up and down. You will see an animal feeder with a curved top on your right, at a bend in the land soon. Stay on this lane passing a farm with green barns on your left – opposite is a small white cottage Castlewright Cottage -THIS IS NOT IT.
Continue driving up this lane until you reach a T-Junction. (There is a white house with high hedge on your left - it is known as The Dog & Duck but is no longer a pub).
Sign at this T-Junction says Pantglas 1¼ miles and Sarn 4½ miles to the right
Turn right here – pass a dirty red phone box on your left and drive 500 yards or so to the next cottage, stone with two chimneys, on your left. You have arrived - parking is on your right.
WELCOME to UPPER CASTLEWRIGHT COTTAGE.
From the East – Midlands and the South – Ludlow and South West through Ludlow.
Turn left off the A49 from Ludlow towards Clun at Craven Arms on to the B4368 and then after about five miles turn right on to the B4385 to Bishop’s Castle at Little Brampton. Then follow signs for Bishop’s Castle town centre.
Go the Parish Church at the bottom of the hill/main street. Take the lane – sign posted Bishop’s Moat - going up the hill between the Church and The Six Bells pub. Follow the single track lane for about two miles up the hill until you reach a road junction where you join the Kerry Ridgeway.
Turn left on to the Ridgeway. After about half a mile you will come to the hamlet of Bishop’s Moat, two or three houses; there is an old earthwork in the field on the right. Here the road you are on curves to the left and another road comes in from the right. Between the two and directly in front of you there is a third road, a slightly smaller lane which is the continuation of the Kerry Ridgeway. Take it.
This road continues gently up hill for half a mile then goes down a steep hill to a staggered crossroads with red telephone box.
There is a white house behind a high hedge on your right - it is known as The Dog & Duck but it is no longer a pub.
Continue straight on – keep and pass the dirty red phone box on your left and drive 500 yards or so to the next cottage, stone with two chimneys, on your left. You have arrived. Parking is on your right.
